Projects Wind Down

April 20, 2007

This past weekend Rebuild had four work-crews.  Two in High Springs and twoin Gainesville.  One of the crews in High Springs was made up of entirely of The Rock of Gainesville (a local church) members and they began to clear space to run electrical at a home.  In a couple weeks The Rock crew will return to completely rewire the home and provide the family with the much need electrical upgrade.  At the other site in High Springs, volunteers finished replacing a leaky tin roof.

Back in Gainesville, volunteers made up primarily of Anti-Gravity laid a new layer of decking to strengthen the roof top.  They then felted, membrane roofed the flat part of the roof, and shingled up the roof.  All the roof work at the site, except for the ridge and hip shingles, was completed.  The crew worked hard and got a lot of work done.  The other crew in Gainesville constructed shelving units for our new storage space that A-Turner Moving & Storage so graciously donated.

Rebuild would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard-work and A-Turner Moving & Storage for our new storage space which quadruples our current space.

This past weekend Rebuild had one worksite running.  The worksite had a little bit of everything going on.  There was drywalling, framing, sheathing the roof, insulating the ceiling, shingling, felting and flashing.  It was a busy day and a lot was accomplished.  Thank you to all the volunteers for their hard-work.

This past weekend we had four work-sites.  Two of which were in High Springs.  The first of the two crews helped clean up debris in preparation for work to begin on the home.  The second site was busy working on removing and replacing a metal roof.  Back in Gainesville, one of the crews worked on completing a ramp, installing metal roofing, and replacing fascia.  While, the other crew in Gainesville was busy replacing the decking on a flat roof, and shingling another part of the home.  We would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard-work.

This past week Rebuild hosted three University of Georgia students.  The students opted for an alternative spring break, and we are glad they did.  They worked all week on a metal roof, except for the morning they unloaded a trailor full of old shingles.  By the end of the week their was a new roof and three tired Georgia students.  We enjoyed meeting and working with Virginia, Kyle, and Cara all week.  Thanks for all your hard-work.

Nailing down the felt paper

It was a busy weekend full of roofing.  The two roofing projects, that were started weeks ago, continued this past weekend.  One of the roofs was finished up, providing the family with a leak free roof for years to come.  The other roof, should continue to take shape over the next few weeks.

Shingles, Shingles, and More Shingles

February 21, 2007

Replacing Decking.

Volunteers on Saturday experienced shingles in excess.  Two roofs were partially stripped of their shingles.  One roof had 4+ layers of shingles!  After the shingles were removed from the roofs, it was discovered that extensive decking had to be repaired.  The crews patched all the decking where it was weak and then proceeded to dry in the roofs with felt paper.  Next weekend, both the roofs will be completely stripped of shingles and then felted.  Soon enough the families will have brand new shingle roofs over their heads and won’t need to worry anymore when it rains.  Thanks to all our volunteers who have worked on these roofs.

A Roof, A Ramp, A Remodel

What was under the 4 layers of shingles.

This past weekend the American Institute of Architectural Students, Sigma Lambda Chi, and a few individual volunteers worked hard to make some family’s homes safer and drier.  A group consisting of mainly AIAS volunteers began work on a leaking roof.  One face of the roof was stripped and the decking was repaired.  Sigma Lambda Chi managed to knock out an entire a ramp and widen three doors, which enabled a woman to no longer be a prisoner of her home.  Three volunteers also continued to work on the bathroom remodel and get it very close to completion.

Painting the home

This past weekend a group of UF students, which mainly consisted of members of the Kappa Epsilon Chi a Christian fraternity, were led by two UF BCN students in painting a home and replacing a section of flooring.  By the end of the day the house was covered in Midnight Sand-dune (a Rebuild exclusive color) which not only made the house look great, but also sealed the siding up from moisture.  In addition, the unstable floor was repaired in the entry-way and the bathroom continued to take shape.
