CWC COORDINATOR- FULL TIME

The CWC is a coalition of partnering agencies, individuals and businesses that are concerned with decreasing energy and water consumption in our community.

This is accomplished by concentrating on volunteer efforts to alleviate utility burdens for low-income families. The CWC’s volunteer efforts are run as a part of Rebuilding Together North Central Florida’s energy efficiency program. So far, these include, but are not limited to: free volunteer energy audits, homeowner educational seminars, and physical weatherization/repair upgrades.

The group of volunteers that worked last weekend are very familiar with helping people, but this project was a bit more “hands-on” than usual.  10 students from UF’s Counselor Education program volunteered Saturday to help make life a little brighter for two area residents. All worked hard to replace damaged drywall, fix a plumbing issue, organize the house and remove dangerous limbs from the roof. The homeowner requires continual oxygen and could not have done these improvements on her own. The counselors did a phenomenal job with repairs and even got the chance to enjoy a cake provided as a “thanks” from the homeowner.

The plumbing was our biggest challenge, but volunteers worked hard to fix a non-functioning kitchen sink.

Just a small break in the day to rest and stay hydrated. Don't worry though- these were two hard working volunteers!

On April 25, 2009, Rebuilding Together North Central Florida joins thousands of volunteers throughout the nation in National Rebuilding Day 2009! Dedicated volunteers work to preserve affordable home-ownership 5 families in need. Local sponsors and volunteers will provide free emergency repairs to neighbors in need throughout Gainesville. At the end of the day, the remaining volunteers pose with a happy homeowner in the new doorway giving access to the laundry room for the first time in years!

The volunteer team will visit this house again next weekend to put some finishing touches in place. I think we can be reassured that they will be on site- regardless of the weather conditions!

On April 26th, Rebuilding Together Affiliates throughout the nation participated in National Rebuilding Day- rehabbing over 7,000 homes and community centers in a massive volunteer effort. Here in Gainesville, four homes were repaired and modified for those in need. (see below for their stories)

Home #1 - Project Sponsor: Charles Perry Construction

Modifications were completed for a family with special needs. The husband and wife in this family adopted two children with special needs after having raised a family of their own. They chose to open their home and hearts to one child with cystic fibrosis and one who is confined to a wheelchair.  Now 14 years later, both parents have health concerns that have put them on lifting restrictions. Volunteers provided modifications throughout the house including building two ramps, replacing torn carpet and installing bathroom accessibility devices toprovide safe access to every part of their home. They were even able to install a special lift into the pool for the youngest daughter to have access to revitalizing hydrotherapy.

Home #2- Project Sponsor: Gainesville Jaycees

The Gainesville Jaycees provided volunteers to help an elderly couple with a few repairs around the house.  The group worked all day to install a safe exit at the front of the home, replace a damaged floor in the bathroom, install a new toilet, and fix a drainage issue outside. The work was beautiful!

Project Sponsor: Gainesville Alachua County Association of Realtors

Accessibility was the word of the day at this worksite.  One 86 year old woman in East Gainesville was given safe access to her home as volunteers built a wheelchair ramp and installed accessibility devices in the bathroom.  Though this homeowner was unable to participate in repairs, she was smiling the entire day and lifted the spirits of volunteers that were able to take a break to visit with her.

Project Sponsor: Stone Soup Foundation

Rebuilding Together returned to this home during Rebuilding Day after replacing the roof about a year ago.  Due to limited resources, RTNCF was unable to continue repairs beyond the roof last spring.  However thanks to a generous sponsorship by Stone Soup and volunteers from The Rock Church, we were able to replace damaged drywall and scrape and paint the exterior of the home.  The homeowner was grateful for the continuation of repairs especially after having lost her husband to cancer last fall.

The beginning of a very productive day…

Rebuilding Together NCF is participating for the first time in National Rebuilding Day.  Over 8,000 homes and community centers will be repaired and rehabbed throughout the nation on April 26, 2008.

Here in Gainesville, RTNCF will be repairing 4 homes for families in need with the help of roughly 60 volunteers and the generous support of local sponsors. Please check back with us for updates on projects from the day.

The Rock- ”Project Sponsor”- 3 times and still going… 

Many thanks to The Rock of Gainesville for their dedication to Rebuilding homes in the Gainesville area.  Over the last few months, The Rock has sponsored three full projects!! This devoted group has done all the fundraising, construction planning and volunteer coordination to successfully complete 3 projects on their own! 

The Rock searched the congregation for skilled contractors, willing volunteers, building materials and monetary donations.   They stepped outside the walls of the church to put their faith into action.  This is the reason they were able to completely rewire a home, replace drywall on a damaged ceiling, paint, repair a water heater, donate furniture and appliances, and more!!

Rebuild Gainesville – Rebuilding Lives, One Home at a Time.

The YELC group (Young Entreprneurs for Leadership and Change) worked on Rebuild projects everyday for 6 weeks straight!  They did a wonderful job- we were so glad to have them!

It’s all smiles after a job well done for these two high school volunteers.

Last Wednesday, Rebuild hosted 30 Realtors from the Gainesville-Alachua County Association of Realtors (GACAR).  They painted 3 homes and also did repairs on the roof and plumbing of a 4th home.  It was one of the hottest summer days we have had- but work went smoothly and the volunteers were visited by local celebrity, Chris Doerring.  TV20 covered the day of service on the 6:00 news and everyone had a blast!  Special thanks to GACAR for all of their hard work in making this event happen, to Millennium Bank for donation of supplies, Mercantile Bank for Lunch Donations, GW Robinson for shirt donations, and Coca-Cola Bottling Company for refreshments.

The morning started at 7:30 am as volunteers got directions for the day and learned about Rebuild’s “3- S’s”!

Rebuild Gainesville would like thank A-Turner Moving and Storage for giving us a semi-trailor to use for storage of materials and tools.  The trailor tripled our storage space.
